Object Desciption In February 1944, Lieutenenant Commander Harry W. Harrison, Jr., headed stateside on board the escort carrier White Plains (CVE 66), his voyage a far cry from like on board a large deck carrier as evidenced by his diary entry of 29 February. The carrier arrived at Naval Air Station (NAS) Alameda, California, on 3 March 1943, making Harrison's diary entry of the previous day come true. "Praise de Lawd! We get off this bucket tomorrow."
Notes Lieutenant Harry W. "Stinky" Harrison, Jr., assumed command of Fighting Squadron (VF) 6 on
11 October 1943 and relinquished command in August 1944. He was a career fighter pilot, having flown
Grumman biplanes as a cadet in the fleet during the late 1930s and served as Executive Office of VF-5.
