On 11 October 1943, Lieutenant Commander Harry W. Harrison assumed command of Fighting Squadron (VF) 6, relieving Medal of Honor recipient and famed fighter ace Lieutenant Commander Edward H. "Butch" O'Hare, who fleeted up to command of Air Group 6. On 11 November 1943, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the end of World War I, Harrison led his squadron on a strike against Rabaul, the events of the day recorded in his 11 November diary entry. The squadron flew from the carrier Independence (CVL 22). |

Lieutenant Harry W. "Stinky" Harrison, Jr., assumed command of Fighting Squadron (VF) 6 on
11 October 1943 and relinquished command in August 1944. He was a career fighter pilot, having flown
Grumman biplanes as a cadet in the fleet during the late 1930s and served as Executive Office of VF-5. |
