On 31 August 1943, Yorktown (CV 10) joined other ships of Task Force 15 under the command of Rear Admiral Charles H. Pownall in striking targets on Marcus Island. The strike represented the the combat debut of the Essex-class and Independence-class aircraft carriers as well as the first combat for the F6F Hellcat fighter, one of which Lieutenant Commander Harry W. Harrison flew that day. His entries for 30-31 August 1943, capturing the lead up to the strikes and the day of battle. |

Lieutenant Harry W. "Stinky" Harrison, Jr., assumed command of Fighting Squadron (VF) 6 on
11 October 1943 and relinquished command in August 1944. He was a career fighter pilot, having flown
Grumman biplanes as a cadet in the fleet during the late 1930s and served as Executive Office of VF-5. |
