Object Desciption Just weeks away from entering combat, Lieutenant Commander Harry W. Harrison reveals the hazards of flying in a 2-3 August 1943, that details the crash and death of a squadronmate. En route to their first combat action, a strike against Marcus Island, the crew of Yorktown (CV 10) experiences tragedy while recovering aircraft, the events recounted in a diary entry of 24 August.
Notes Lieutenant Harry W. "Stinky" Harrison, Jr., assumed command of Fighting Squadron (VF) 6 on
11 October 1943 and relinquished command in August 1944. He was a career fighter pilot, having flown
Grumman biplanes as a cadet in the fleet during the late 1930s and served as Executive Office of VF-5.
