Lieutenant Commander Harry W. Harrison's first entries in his diary come in July 1943 while serving in Fighting Squadron (VF) 5 in the aircraft carrier Yorktown (CV 10). An Essex-class carrier commissioned on 15 April 1943, Yorktown departed Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, on 6 July 1943, and set course for the Panama Canal, gateway to the war in the Pacific. Harrison's entries from this cruise west recount a submarine torpedo scare and the institution of a grading system to improve pilot performance when landing aboard. He also notes his two year wedding anniverary on 12 July. |
